Where to Stay in the Val d'Orcia

farm holiday
Division of agricultural land in the Val d'Orcia in the past into separate farming units has favoured the diffusion of a large number of rural dwellings in the territory. Today, many of these buildings have been converted into fascinating and good value holiday homes and farmhouses of distinction and quality. Although a farm house holiday is undoubtedly the most characteristic of lodgings, towns, castles and Spa hotels also offer solutions for all tastes, thus satisfying both the most discriminating and the more easy-going tourist.
Below are some of our favourite choices ...

Agriturismo Passalacqua
A typical Val d'Orcia farmhouse with historical connections to the Via Francigena

In the heart of the Val d'Orcia, 'Passalacqua' was built in the medieval period on the old path of the Via Francigena adjacent to the eleventh stop - Abricula - noted in 990 AD by Sigeric, the archbishop of Canterbury, in the diary he kept on his way to Rome to visit Pope John XV.
On a hill near a stream, surrounded by meadows, wheat fields, poppies and flowering broom, this farmhouse offers complete tranquillity as well as a view over the valley. Bagno Vignoni, Chianciano, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Pienza, Radicofani and San Quirico d'Orcia are within easy reach. The farmhouse can accommodate 16 people in 2 apartments and a number of individual bedrooms.
The apartments cost €30 per head with the possibility of slight variations in price according to the way in people are accommodated. This tariff includes an abundant and traditional breakfast with seasonal products from the kitchen garden.

Castelluccio
Once upon a time in a far off land…

The medieval castle of Castelluccio (literally 'little castle') is situated on the top of a hill owned by La Foce. The precise date of its foundation is not known but it was probably constructed in the Eleventh century on the site of an Etruscan necropolis. The entrance courtyard opens out into two apartments named Tartaruga (tortoise) and Etrusco (etruscan) which were beautifully restored in 2001 and furnished with old family furniture. Each apartment has splendid views over the surrounding hills, woods and typical clay craters of the Val d'Orcia.

Fonte Bertusi
There is no more extraordinary, that is to say, more than real place, than this

On arrival at Fonte Bertusi you will be greeted by an enormous multi-coloured cock in his cage. It is like being greeted at dawn. Walking around the farm you bump into a number of very strange objects, including gigantic eyes looking up at you from the ground; an extremely tall chair that you can't reach (even if you stand on tiptoe) which is meant to elevate your thoughts; a dragon that over time has been transformed into a wagon, or vice versa. Amusing encounters for some; magic and artistic for others and for yet others relaxing artefacts, because they reduce to their right dimensions the human being's true significance.

Villa Pieri
At the court of his majesty, Brunello

The existence of a small Eighteenth-century chapel facing the villa's garden attests to the fact that this was once a convent. At a later date it was converted into a summer residence for the family of the present owner, Signora Maria Floria Biondi Santi Petri. The villa is about 3 km from the centre of Montalcino and is completely immersed in the green of the famous Brunello vineyards of Montalcino and luxuriant silver olive groves, thus offering one of the most splendid panoramas in the Val d'Orcia.
Here, you can breathe in the atmospheric surroundings of the place where a myth was created: the Brunello wine of Montalcino.
